We adopted a black male lab from you at your pet fest last spring. His name was morty/ marty but we re-named him as Harvey. We got off to a bit of a rocky start as Harvey became very sick in the first month that we had him. Our local vet diagnosed him with a rare form of fungal infection called Cryptococcus. We immediately started treatment on Harvey with a strong anti-fungal and antibiotic. He remains on this medicine to date but is remarkably better and healthier looking than May or June of this year. Harvey is a happy boy who loves to retrieve, ride in the truck or car or go for walks. He gets lots of exercise and has become a great part of our lives. We love him to death. He does not bark much, we suspect he may have been under a bark collar with original owner. He has been a great rescue, and we are very happy we came to your pet fest and found wild heir and Harvey. We are glad that we were one of your successful adoptions in 2011. Thanks also to Erin and her husband for being great foster parents!!!!

Good Samaritan Anita Silvers of Whitmire, SC found this bleeding, emaciated chocolate Lab after leaving the grocery store on Thursday evening, Dec. 8. Being the kind of woman she is, she picked her up, and took her home. She made a warm bed for her on the porch that night, fed her well and woke up to 9 babies and mom the next morning! Anita does this for any neglected animal she finds in her small, rural town although she can't really afford to and is also disabled by fibromyalgia.

On Friday, she took mom and pups to Triangle Vet Care in Union, SC - 30 minutes away -
where pups were given a check up, and mom was started on antibiotics and had her wound cleaned. The vet, Dr. Grantham, thought that "Patty", as Anita had begun calling the wounded mom in honor of the Patrick Miracle, had been shot at and grazed at close range by a small caliber pistol, most likely by her neglectful owner in order to escape the added responsibility of unplanned puppies. Anita postdated a check for the amount of the bill and asked the vet to hold it til she could come up with enough money to cover it. She sent out a plea for rescue assistance to internet acqaintances, which Jenni Horne saw and crossposted to Lab Rescue groups.

Wild Heir Lab Rescue got that email plea Friday night and immediately responded. Jenni
and Anita were contacted and a plan for volunteer transport was made for Sunday, Dec. 11. Anita drove down to Columbia and was met by Wild Heir foster mom, Alicia Matthews, who then picked up another WH volunteer, Denise Flowers, to head straight to a local vet.

Dr. Addy Fogel-Owens of Kingstree Animal Hospital met them and proceeded to anesthetize and suture up the gaping gash in Patty's neck, as well as making the gruesome discovery that Patty's throat had been slashed with a knife rather that shot with a gun. Denise assisted Dr. Fogel-Owens, while Alicia was in charge of keeping rubber gloves filled with warm water to keep the puppies warm. Patty submitted to the entire ordeal with a wag and a continued trust in people both heartbreaking and heartwarming to see.

We posted this unfolding saga on our Wild Heir Lab Rescue Facebook page and people have stepped up to help in so many ways! 8 of the newborn puppies have survived and are nursing strongly, SCNow.com/WBTW Channel 13 out of Florence, SC videoed Patty & pups during an interview on their plight, we now have 3 drop off locations set up for much needed dog supplies, and Anita filed a police report about Patty's attack/abuse.

Wild Heir paid Anita's vet bill today and asked them to tear up her check and three people have requested Anita's home address to help her recover from her unexpected puppy supplies and gas expenses...Our Christmas miracle is still unfolding!

Donations for Patty & Pups' vetting expenses incurred while in our care may be sent directly to Kingstree Animal Clinic/Dr. Fogel - 201 N. Williamsburg County Hwy, Kingstree, SC 29556 and note Wild Heir Lab Rescue - Patty & Pups, or you can donate directly through our website via Click & Pledge and specify Patty & Pups.

She will be forever loved and missed and I am so grateful to WHLR for saving her for me. She was very spoiled in her retirement and brought so much to my life with that gentle temperament and those soulful eyes.
April 3 will be the happy first anniversary of my adoption of Mama (now Daisy) from WHLR. She is doing great and was a success story for heartworm treatment-yeah! She has such a sweet and goofy personality, bringing daily laughs to my life. She is also very happy to have a new friend next door, Crystal, also adopted from WHLR. Daisy loves to play in the backyard and takes all of her stuffed babies with her to "play."
Thank you WHLR!

Happy, yappy 2011 from Wild Heir! Although 2010 was a "ruff" one for many of us, we are thrilled to report that we had 98 Wild Heir adoptions last year - from puppies to seniors - including Callie, Sadie and Roman, who had all been waiting on a family for 2+ years! We "High 5" all of our generous supporters and volunteers that helped us save Labby lives. We simply could not do it without you!

February is a busy one for us with Valentine's Day coming up, and the Southeastern Wildlife Expo just around the corner, not to mention puppy season has started early and the shelters are overflowing with Labs in need of rescue.

To start things off, everyone's favorite doggie daycare, Camp Bow Wow, is hosting Cupids & Canines Doggie Adopt-A-Thon. Join us on Sunday, Feb. 13 from 11:30 - 3:30 pm for some tail waggin' fun with raffle prizes, games and treats for people and pooches! Camp Bow Wow, located at 1745 Clements Ferry Road between Mount Pleasant and Charleston, is a staunch supporter of rescue and has helped us place many Wild Heir Labs into wonderful, fur-ever homes.

The Southeastern Wildlife Expo will be in full swing daily Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 18th-20th. Come on out and support rescue, get your Lab fix, volunteer to walk a dog, watch the Dock Dogs diving contests or just enjoy all the artful offerings of SEWE. We hope to see YOU at SEWE!

JB and I just wanted to let you know that our wonderful Sam (we adopted him this past July) is thriving! He has filled out (he weighed 65 pounds when we got him. He now is 78 pounds of lean muscle) and has made our home his own. All of our neighbors have been amazed at how well is has adapted to us and to the other dogs on the block. He now will retrieve his dummy, but still doesn't care at all about fetching anything else. He loves the ocean and swimming. He is my running companion - we run 3.5 miles on a 3 or more times a week. He is wonderful with the grandchildren (we have 6, ages 18 months to 10 years) - very gentle especially with the babies. Our lives are enriched by Sam and his loving attitude. He is a great family member and we are so glad to have him.
Thank you so much for taking such good care of Sam until we came along.
